Chapter 37

“She’s a sexy spy lady. All I’m saying Kap, is you should have tapped that!”

Kap sighed and continued their course across the coral bridge. Turquoise water surrounded them. It was peaceful. It couldn’t be trusted.

He had made it back to the resort by nightfall to find an agitated Dai still holding her post by the water. But as he filled her in, she was far less interested in the question of Radcliff’s involvement or where Cassel’s secret oil drill was or what it had to do with this damn resort. Instead, she only cared about one part of the story.

“Tapped that?” Kap arched an eyebrow. “I’m definitely having a conversation with Raph when we get back.”

“Actually, I learned that one from Sig,” Dai said. “I don’t really understand it though.”

“It’s about...never mind.” He walked faster, back toward their room. Dai easily kept pace. “And I barely know anything about her, except for the fact that everything I did know about her was a lie.”

“You’ve got so much in common already!” Dai said. “And you like her, right? You’re into her? You think she’s a smoking hottie with a body?”

“What?”

“You find her attractive?”

“That doesn’t have anything to do with it.”

Dai stopped walking. “I know that TV isn’t always real, but I’ve been led to believe that attraction has at least something to do with it.”

Kap turned around just outside their door. “What I mean is, my attraction toward our mystery lady, or your attraction toward Guille—”

“Hey, I’m not—”

“Is irrelevant,” Kap continued, “to the mission at hand. We gather intel. We stop bad guys. We save innocents. We—”

“Swap spit with sexy spy ladies.”

Kap couldn’t help but smile a little as he remembered the feel of Bets’ lips on his. “That was...tactical.”

Dai danced up and down. “See, I knew there was a loophole. You should have tactically tapped that. James Bond does it all the time.”

“James Bond,” Kap nearly shouted as he grabbed the door handle, “is a terrible spy. He’s got no caution, no tact, he always uses his real name, which is absurd for a spy to do, and he’s always stumbling into danger. What kind of idiot—”

Kap pushed open the door and stopped dead in his tracks. Mieke and two large attendants stood in the middle of their room. Their furniture was scattered and their luggage in tatters.

“You were saying,” Dai smirked.

“Get them!” Mieke shouted to the two men. They charged immediately at Kap, confident they could overpower the older man. He simply ducked, and their scowls turned to shouts as Dai came flying over Kap’s back, feet first into their twisted faces.

With the goons occupied, Kap turned toward the leader of this little breaking and entering soiree. She was ready for him.

“Listen, about earlier,” Kap said. “No hard feelings, okay? I thought you needed some rest. You looked tired.”

“And you look like dead meat.”

She swung at him with a left hook hearty enough to take down a horse. But Kap dodged the attack easily enough. His attacker was just like Boyle.
