Main Features of Economy

The Kakwa possess but few cattle, for though in 1937 Nalder said they had “a fair amount,” the Equatorial Province Handbook of 1936 gives them only 690 head, and the latest (1952) figure is 100 head. Goats are numerous, but sheep are rather scarce. Women do not milk the cows. The Kakwa economy of today is mainly agricultural, and they grow maize, eleusine, ground-nuts, simsim, sweet potatoes, and cassava. They also set up honey-barrels. Young women do not eat fowls, though after having had a number of children they will do so. Men and women eat eggs, except the women of the Tokosang section in the west, who in addition do not eat sheep or goats’ meat.
