A Journeyman Illustrator

For the next several years, I was a journeyman archaeological illustrator working at sites in Egypt, Syria, Cyprus, and Greece, drawing primarily pottery and small objects. In 1980, I joined the Department of Egyptian Art in the Metropolitan Museum as the resident draftsman, drawing material in the collection for publication. Yet again, this was essentially drawing pottery and small objects, although, I was working my way up to coffins and furniture. I was also involved in the department’s excavations in the field, directed by Dieter Arnold (1988) primarily at the Middle Kingdom pyramid site at Lisht. Although this work entailed surveying and planning architecture, I was still no closer to epigraphy. Ironically, after I left the department the site yielded masses of beautiful relief fragments that my successors had the pleasure to draw. I, on the other hand, would have to wait several more years before finding my way back to epigraphy.
