Elise wandered through the dining room, smiling and chatting with some of the regulars dining at Firefly Bistro. She loved this part of her job, the act of mingling with the guests—making them feel comfortable and at home was one of the personal touches that had made the bistro an institution in Sea Breeze Cove. As she chatted with the guests, refreshing a glass of water here, picking up an empty plate there, she kept an eye on Bridget.

The waitress flitted among the tables, taking orders and keeping tabs on her tables with a friendly efficiency that Elise appreciated. The first few days, Bridget had seemed to cower a bit, had seemed hesitant to interact with the guests, as though waiting for wrath and judgment at any minute. For the most part, though, the bistro had settled back into its rhythms, and Bridget had settled in as well. Elise was glad to see the change, but she still kept a watchful eye on the waitress. She wanted Bridget to succeed, but now that she’d been burned once, she knew it would take some time for her to fully trust the woman again. As it was, Bridget was doing excellent work and keeping the customers happy, and Elise was grateful to see that Bridget really seemed to be trying to take advantage of the fresh start she’d been given.

The bell on the front door chimed and Elise looked to the front of the dining room to see Charlotte walking into the bistro. Excusing herself from the elderly couple she’d been chatting with, Elise wove her way through the tables and greeted her friend with a hug.

“So good to see you,” she said with a smile. “Stopping in for some dinner? Is Briggs going to join you?”

Charlotte shook her head. “I can’t stay, actually. Briggs is making us dinner at home right now, but I wanted to stop by on my way home from work to talk to you about some lunch plans for when my mom and sister come to town.”

“Oh, that’s right! They’re coming to Sea Breeze Cove soon, right?”

Charlotte nodded. “I really want them to remember how amazing this town is, so I thought a lunch here might be just the thing.” She rolled her eyes with a smile. “I think they thought I was crazy when I moved here without a plan.”

“Well, we’re all glad you moved here,” Elise replied with a grin, then winked. “Especially Briggs.” The two chuckled at that. “Is Briggs going to join you three for lunch?”

“I’m not sure… he might make an appearance, but you know how it’s going to be—my mother will definitely grill him, and that’s the last thing he needs. I know he’s excited to meet them, but he’s a little nervous since they know about the proposal… and also that I haven’t answered him yet.”

Elise reached out and touched Charlotte’s arm. “I’m sure it’s going to go great! Briggs can definitely handle himself, and I’m sure he’ll charm your mother and sister.
