Eating and Drinking
The ancient village boasts a couple of suitably ancient pubs which you pass en route: sixteenth-century Ye Old Black Horse which was a centre of the smuggling trade, and the more gentrified Plough, which sits by the duck pond. Both serve good pub food. Overlooking the beach, little Sea Spray café is an excellent stop for quality ice cream, coffee and cakes (including vegan).
The coast path to Brighton
6km Turn right to head along the beach, on the undercliff path which takes you all the way to the city, under the shadow of white chalk cliffs, with pebble strands, rock pools and strewn seaweed on the beach to your left.
Just over halfway along you come to Brighton marina â there are occasional diversions here when the path ahead is closed, and you have to ascend the hill and take the overcliff path. The two routes meet at an ugly flyover â continue to follow the English Coast Path signs under the flyover.
Walk along the boardwork â and eventually you come to a confluence of attractions that announce your arrival in pleasure-loving Brighton: Volkâs Electric Railway, a new lido, mini golf, beach volleyball and a café. Panels describes the attempts to restore gorgeous cast iron Madeira Terrace which sits under the cliffs to your right. Beach Box Sauna (www.beachboxspa.co.uk) comprises a circle of saunas made from repurposed horse boxes, which sit in a cosy circle on the shingle.
The pier to the station
1.5km There are plenty of options to take you via the lively shops, cafes and restaurants of Brightonâs distinctive narrow Lanes. For a more straightforward route, head west along the seafront from the pier to West Street, and then turn right, heading up the hill to reach the station.
