DHṚTI: DETERMINATION AND TENACITY

The ninth yama, dhṛti, is related to kṣamā. It refers to being steadfast in the face of adversity. We could call it determination with courage, or perhaps tenacity, but these are only approximate translations; there may be no equivalent English expression. In essence, the idea of dhṛti is that, once we have set our intention, it must not be disturbed by anything.

Indian scriptures tell the story of some villagers who wanted to catch a monkey and devised a simple plan. They made a small hole in a section of bamboo. The hole was just large enough for the monkey to squeeze its hand through. They then put a banana inside the hole. The monkey would see the banana, squeeze its hand through the hole, and grab hold of the banana. But with its hand now clenched into a fist, it was suddenly too large to pull back out of the hole. Given the monkey’s strong determination to get the banana, even when faced with death, it would not let go. Thus, the villagers would catch the monkey, using the monkey’s own determination!
