Chapter Fourteen

They updated the group back on Cameron land, then made plans to head into the Highlands. It was their only option, as far as Cadyn could see. There was no point in delaying either.

Cadyn mounted his horse ahead of everyone, Dyna and Brin directly behind him.

“Did ye wish to consider whether or not it is Tryana first?” Dyna yelled at him. “The name isn’t right.”

“Close enough for me,” Cadyn yelled back. “Lads never get names correct, but ye would no’ know that, Dyna. Ye have lasses.”

Dyna glanced over at Brin who was nodding with a grin. “He’s right. Though we do have one lad, I’ll no’ argue yer reasoning. Even Derric canno’ repeat names to me. Where are ye going, Cadyn?”

“North. She’s heading north into the Highlands as the reivers told us. I believe them because they had no reason to lie. ‘Tis my sense of what is happening anyway. Dyna’s dream of the waterfall was true, and mine concerns an old tower. I suspect ‘tis the one owned by de Gray. The baron has her and he’s taking her to de Gray’s castle where there are two opposing oaks on the path, but I dinnae know exactly where.”

“I’ll follow. Go. Take the main path to see if ye can track them,” Brin said. “Dyna can tell from riding at a top speed.”

The only problem was that it was dark. Much more difficult to see anyone’s tracks, but they’d be moving slower too. “I’m no’ worried. They dinnae know the Highlands like we do.”

“Verra true,” Dyna said.

They split into two groups, Perrin riding with Brin. Maitland led the group that was to fan out and patrol deeper into the forests while Dyna, Cadyn, Alaric, and Brin were charging forward knowing the bastard had at least an hour on horseback ahead of them. Alaric, being a Grant, would know the area better.

About half into the hour, Cadyn noticed something unusual. He slowed his horse when he caught something out of the corner of his eye, a path that had recently been taken based on the broken bushes. Either that or a herd of deer had just run through.

“I see it, Cadyn,” Dyna said. “We need to follow it. This was done by multiple large animals.”

They took the path at a slower pace because it wasn’t the main path, and it was deep in the forest. Dyna rode ahead of Cadyn because she was the better tracker. Every time she slowed, she pointed in a different direction and they followed. Cadyn was amazed at her instinct.

Within a quarter hour, sounds of a group settling for the night could be heard. They were rather raucous, but soon enough, they discovered why. As soon as Dyna set eyes on the group, she spun around on her horse and said, “Ramsay, ye’ll not move until we make a plan. We are heavily outnumbered. Nearly a score to four.”

“Five,” Perrin whispered. “I have my bow.”

“Is this the group, Perri?” Brin asked, moving abreast of Cadyn so they could observe the group from a well-hidden spot in the trees.
