Twenty-two years old

The ground swallowed up much of the rain that had fallen that morning; the gravediggers grateful for a little softening of the turf to ease their back-straining task. The mound was piled high above the deep rectangle of the grave. Such a little space we take up in the vastness of the world. A dark rectangle in the ground is enough to contain all we were and all we ever would be, till worms turn us to dust. The sun, poking valiantly through the thick mist, did nothing to brighten the mood of the gathered mourners. About forty in all, this was, to any observer, the interment of someone of note. The funeral cortège – carriages, liveried footmen, ladies’ maids in black to match their mistresses, plumed horses, as well as the bishop in full regalia. Guardsmen and retired officers stood in solemn order, whether active soldier or veteran. The servants all had the air of true – and not simply dutiful – grief. This person was loved, you would say, as one who had treated every soul who came into their purview with equanimity and grace. Mary, Duchess of Montagu was laid to rest to the sounds of a lone cellist – an instrument dear to her heart.

Two years as butler in service to the Great Dame, and now I am without gainful employment, once again. Not destitute, though. Not ever, again. Thanks to the generosity of my late mistress, I have an annuity to nurture. Thirty pounds will be my stake and this time I will not squander all on one throw of the bones.
