Dad

PS: Read 2 Timothy 2:1–6 in the NIV.

Grandma Scofield made a prophetic statement when I was born. And Grandma is not notably prone to that sort of thing. She doesn’t say things willy-nilly. But when Dad called and told her that I was born she told him, “Luis, this one is going to be an evangelist.”

Dad knew exactly how to take that; he held on to it—stowed it away in his heart. He would share that story with me periodically when I was nowhere near walking with God, even resistant to it. Almost like he was reminding me of my destiny. I suppose when he caught wind of my little speaking engagement with the youth group in Bangor something perked up in his spirit.

Funny how you can find strands of your destiny in your memory when you take the time to search it.

Those walks Dad and I took were common for me growing up. When you’re a young boy, it’s tough to not feel awkward and squirmy, wanting such times to be over. But I did hear my dad’s words of encouragement and correction. They stuck with me throughout my life.

I guess God enjoyed using my dad, and my mom, as He pursued me. He gave me every chance to come to Him. And though I ignored Him, He was faithful, and my parents were faithful. All the walks, all the letters, all the books Dad would send me with personal notes scribbled on the inside flap—all of it chipped away at my stony, rebellious exterior.

And as those who loved me chipped away, I lay beneath, deaf and foolish, refusing the hand outstretched to me.
