Hearing from God

Because I listen diligently to the voice of the Lord my God, being watchful to do all His commandments which He commands me this day, the Lord my God will set me high above all the nations of the earth.

—DEUTERONOMY 28:1

God has given me the capacity to hear and obey [His law, a more valuable service than] burnt offerings and sin offerings [which] He does not require.

—PSALM 40:6

Today I will hear His voice . . . and harden not my heart.

—PSALM 95:7, 8

Your statutes are wonderful; therefore I obey them. The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.

—PSALM 119:129-130 (NIV)

Because I listen to and obey God’s voice, He will be my God and I will be one of His people.

—JEREMIAH 7:23

I hear the words of the Lord and act upon them [obeying them] like a sensible (prudent, practical, wise) man who built his house upon the rock. And the rain fell and the floods came and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.

—MATTHEW 7:24-25

As I hear the Word of the kingdom (sown in the good soil of my heart), and grasp and comprehend it; . . . it will indeed bear fruit and yield a good return.

—MATTHEW 13:19, 23

I hear my Father’s voice and the voice of a stranger I will not follow.

—JOHN 10:5

I am one of God’s sheep and His sheep hear His voice.

—JOHN 10:27

Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

—ROMANS 10:17 (NKJV)

I do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive myself. I do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it—he will be blessed in what he does.

—JAMES 1:22-25 (NIV)
