The world of the shifters was different, nearly as different as this side of the Veil and the other. It wasn’t so much that the forest itself was different, though there was that component. There was a sweeping arch to the way the trees grew, their branches curving overhead, creating shade and shadows that was meant to unsettle. It served its purpose, leaving me uncomfortable here. I couldn’t help but be impressed with the power I detected.

That power was all around me. It flowed up from the ground, from the roots of the trees and interconnected in a way that reminded me of the nymphs on the other side of the Veil. Nymphs used the interconnectedness of the forest, sharing their secrets, and I had to wonder if perhaps the shifters were somehow more like them than what I had previously believed. They wouldn’t be related to them. The shifters had a different progenitor, creatures they referred to as the Great Ones, and creatures that Max refused to speak much of. Jessica researched them but hadn’t discovered anything of use. Yet.

A pair of massive trees grew up on either side of me, the thickness of their trunks reminding me of a younger version of trees on the other side of the Veil. When I passed between them, tingling washed over my skin. I checked to ensure that I still had a connection to my magic and was relieved when I found that I did. There was a purpose to that tingling, though I wasn’t entirely sure what it was.

Without Max here with me, I felt a little out of my element, but it wouldn’t be the first time that happened. With the Taker of Spells, I had an advantage I wouldn’t otherwise have.

Movement all around me alerted me to the presence of other shifters. I couldn’t see them, but I knew they were there. Every so often, I would push outward with my connection to magic, reaching for a sense of those other shifters, looking to see if they were trying to get closer to me or not, but it seemed as if they ignored me.

Jasmine guided me to a clearing. Smaller shrubs grew, and by small, they were only twenty or thirty feet tall, and all of them had spindly sort of branches, twisting with thick and rough bark along the surface. I could feel power coming from it, different than what I had detected elsewhere. I focused on that sense of power, trying to determine if it came from the forest itself or whether it was from the shifters.

There was something to that power that struck a familiar chord with me. I had sensed it before. That was unexpected.

Where had I picked up on that sense before?

It took a moment before I realized where it was and why there was such a familiarity to it.

The other side of the Veil.

The power that was present here was a reflection of the power on the other side, and the more I sensed it, the more certain I was that I was right.
