Seamus, Daithí and Sorcha took their letters, slipped their thumbs under the sealed edge and ripped. Sorcha stole a quick anxious glance at Cara, then looked back down at her letter. Cara studied the others, watched as nervous hands each took a letter out of the envelope and unfolded them. Cara held her breath. She didn’t blink. After a moment’s consideration, like judges in a competition, they turned the letters to show everyone else.

GIVE IT BACK.

The same sentence in each one. The same writing. The same sense of threat.

They put them down in the centre of the table, a malevolent pile. Plates of food, so recently attacked with gusto, were pushed aside, forgotten about. Each of the friends stared wordlessly at the sinister collection. Seamus got up and went to the window, looked out, even though whomever had dropped these letters would be long gone. Who knew how long they’d even been lying there on the mat?

Slowly Cara opened hers. Took out the sheet within. She unfolded it and stared.

GIVE IT BACK.
