Chapter 21

C.W. Post Campus

Day 7

6 a.m.

He woke at the sound of feet hitting the floor and his eyes shot open. The sun was already peaking up over the horizon, filling the room with dim light through the plastic taped over the window.

Andy swore, rolled out of bed and hurried for the door. There were already a couple of people in the common room and Carla wasn’t one of them. He slowed his pace, walked over the Natasha’s room, knocked once then slipped inside. All three girls turned to look at him, Maria sitting on the edge of her bed with the blanket wrapped around her, Tanya pulling a sweatshirt on over the one she was already wearing and Natasha brushing her long black hair wearing nothing but panties and a tight fitting sleeveless t-shirt.

“Oh, this better be good, honey, or they’re going to be measuring you for a pine box,” Tanya said

Maria just stared at him; she couldn’t believe his audacity.

Natasha had traded the brush for a thick book, and from the way she was holding it, it didn’t look like she was planning to read it. Crack his skull, more likely.

“They know we’re leaving,” he said in a rush. “Halston knows we’re taking the horses.”

He quickly explained what he’d seen last night and saw doubt on Tanya’s and Maria’s faces. He couldn’t read Natasha; she was her usual inscrutable self.

“Carla wouldn’t do that to us,” Tanya said. “She’s our friend.”

“Yeah, I think you’re being paranoid,” Maria agreed.

Natasha had quickly dressed, seemingly unconcerned that Andy was in the room.

“We leave now,” she said and quickly crammed the few items she owned into a small backpack and rolled her bedding into a tight bundle. “Horses are very valuable. They won’t let us take them. Even if she didn’t tell him, they might figure it out today and they will be careful with them. Halston Raleigh will post guards.”

She grabbed a leather jacket from the closet, tore the plastic away from the window, opened it, looked to see if there was anyone outside then climbed out.

“Hurry,” she said and disappeared, walking quickly toward the stables on the other side of the campus.

The girls shooed Andy out then finished dressing and packing their bags. Andy went back to his room to grab his gear and crammed his few possessions and clothes into a gym bag then stripped the bed.

“What are you doing?” one of his roommates asked.

“These things reek,” he answered. “Whoever slept here before me was nasty. I’m going to get them washed before Halston puts us to work digging those latrines.”

“Where?” Simon asked. “They open the laundromat back up and forget to tell us?”

“The pond,” he answered as he left. “Then lay them out on the rocks. They’ll dry fast.”

He caught up with Tanya and Maria as they passed the tennis courts, all of them hurrying in the gray dawn light. Their breath hung in the air, but it would warm up once the sun rose.

Natasha had the corral gate open
