Chapter 21
C.W. Post Campus
Day 7
6 a.m.
He woke at the sound of feet hitting the floor and his eyes shot open. The sun was already peaking up over the horizon, filling the room with dim light through the plastic taped over the window.
Andy swore, rolled out of bed and hurried for the door. There were already a couple of people in the common room and Carla wasnât one of them. He slowed his pace, walked over the Natashaâs room, knocked once then slipped inside. All three girls turned to look at him, Maria sitting on the edge of her bed with the blanket wrapped around her, Tanya pulling a sweatshirt on over the one she was already wearing and Natasha brushing her long black hair wearing nothing but panties and a tight fitting sleeveless t-shirt.
âOh, this better be good, honey, or theyâre going to be measuring you for a pine box,â Tanya said
Maria just stared at him; she couldnât believe his audacity.
Natasha had traded the brush for a thick book, and from the way she was holding it, it didnât look like she was planning to read it. Crack his skull, more likely.
âThey know weâre leaving,â he said in a rush. âHalston knows weâre taking the horses.â
He quickly explained what heâd seen last night and saw doubt on Tanyaâs and Mariaâs faces. He couldnât read Natasha; she was her usual inscrutable self.
âCarla wouldnât do that to us,â Tanya said. âSheâs our friend.â
âYeah, I think youâre being paranoid,â Maria agreed.
Natasha had quickly dressed, seemingly unconcerned that Andy was in the room.
âWe leave now,â she said and quickly crammed the few items she owned into a small backpack and rolled her bedding into a tight bundle. âHorses are very valuable. They wonât let us take them. Even if she didnât tell him, they might figure it out today and they will be careful with them. Halston Raleigh will post guards.â
She grabbed a leather jacket from the closet, tore the plastic away from the window, opened it, looked to see if there was anyone outside then climbed out.
âHurry,â she said and disappeared, walking quickly toward the stables on the other side of the campus.
The girls shooed Andy out then finished dressing and packing their bags. Andy went back to his room to grab his gear and crammed his few possessions and clothes into a gym bag then stripped the bed.
âWhat are you doing?â one of his roommates asked.
âThese things reek,â he answered. âWhoever slept here before me was nasty. Iâm going to get them washed before Halston puts us to work digging those latrines.â
âWhere?â Simon asked. âThey open the laundromat back up and forget to tell us?â
âThe pond,â he answered as he left. âThen lay them out on the rocks. Theyâll dry fast.â
He caught up with Tanya and Maria as they passed the tennis courts, all of them hurrying in the gray dawn light. Their breath hung in the air, but it would warm up once the sun rose.
Natasha had the corral gate open
