If she thought I was leaving she had another thing coming. She was mad at me, and I’d never pissed her off so bad that she didn’t even want to look at me. I should have just kept my mouth shut when she said she didn’t want him to learn how to shoot a gun. If he was going to be a country boy, he’d have to learn how to shoot, among other things. But it wasn’t my place; he wasn’t my son. And I crossed a line I shouldn’t have.

I walked over to the guest house and made my way inside to make myself a drink. With my drink in hand, I sat on the front steps, because if I couldn’t be with Ellie, I’d make damn sure no one set foot on this property that didn’t need to be here.

The concrete was hot, even through my jeans. This summer had been the worst, weather wise, in years. The state had been in a draught and I was hoping for rain to release soon. The crops were suffering, too.

Pressing my back into the door, I kept watch over Ellie, even if I couldn’t be with her.
