Nutrition

Nutritional therapy for heart disease is not a cornerstone of Western medical therapy; often dietary recommendations are not part of a conventional treatment plan. There is a prescription diet for dogs that is low in sodium (to maintain blood pressure) and supplemented with amino acids (L-carnitine and taurine) and antioxidants (to support the heart muscle). No prescription diet currently exists for cats.

When a pet with heart disease loses weight and muscle mass, it is known as cardiac cachexia. This condition is associated with decreased quality of life and decreased survival times.25 Therefore, be sure to provide a highly palatable diet with a high energy density so that your pet maintains appropriate body weight and muscle mass.
