The Holy Scripture is the well of Jacob from which the waters are drawn which will be poured out later in prayer. Thus, there will be no need to go to the oratory to begin to pray; but in reading itself, means will be found for prayer and contemplation.[26]

Of all the scriptures to be drawn out of that well, and poured out later in prayer, surely the Book of Psalms is the greatest, for these scriptures were already prayer and song, were already liturgy before they were scripture. When we chant the Psalms we are praying prayers that were on the lips of Christ, and participating in a tradition which goes back centuries before Christianity, which we share with the ancient and living faith of the Jewish peoples.

The Psalms are ancient, and yet always new, as I found when I prayed them afresh as part of the daily offices during the course of the pandemic and lockdowns of 2020. As I wrote in the Preface to David’s Crown, the collection of new poetry I composed in response to these ancient poems:
