CHAPTER TEN

Helen Daylex

It was starting to feel like leaving the Horizon behind was a mistake.

At the same time, it wasn’t like they could bring the ship with them. It was too damned big to fit inside the world engine. To her, the ship was mostly useless unless they were being resupplied. The one nice thing about having a ship was the fabrication units. They should have been using the materials to make more drills. Hunter would have demanded it. However, bullets felt like a more practical decision.

There were a lot of dangers in the universe.

Helen thought she could handle anything thrown at her until this trip. She wasn’t prepared for aliens. Her Guardians had mopped the floor with them, but they wouldn’t have been able to without help. Layani’s assistance was vital. Not only as a friend but for her growth as a person. Layani taught her to live a life with intention. She was still getting pushed into uncomfortable positions but was better for it.

Until now.

Helen could have lived with skipping this part of the journey. The creatures up ahead had no business existing outside a nightmare. If she wanted to live with intention, she should intentionally get as far away from here as possible. What good was growing as a person if you were dead?

Some things were more important than zosmodious.

Helen would have traded all the Zos on Viridian for a ride home. As long as it came with a slice of pizza and a hot bath. If they pushed her on the price, she would have settled for Hawaiian pizza. If she could go back in time to assassinate one person, it would be the monster who put pineapple and ham on the same pizza. That man was a truly diabolical villain. Imagine handing someone a slice of the most delicious food in the world only to have it include pineapple.

Might as well shoot the dog at the end of a movie.

Still, she would eat the shit out of a Hawaiian pizza right now. She wouldn’t even pick off the pieces she didn’t like. They were living on nutrient paste and dehydrated meals. Real food of any kind would have been an upgrade. Even the processed stuff. Cheap, over-salted, and calorie-dense. It was exactly what her body craved.

She would also give up all her dreams of food for a proper bath. Something with one of those bombs that fizzed and smelled divine. She was tired of showering in recycled water.

After pizza and a hot bath, she would sleep for a week. No joke. Down on the couch, might get up for the bathroom. Might was the keyword. Her body was tired. She felt like an NFL player asked to play a fifty-two-week season. She was ready to relax.

Only a little longer.

The dream she wanted was just out of reach, but it wouldn’t be for long.

As soon as they found a way past the gravity well, things would change. The Vishari thought they had it bad facing her small squadron.
