Eighteen

After a long line of expletives, Ken Beekman got himself under control. How in the holy hell was what he was seeing even possible? Those prehistoric-looking fish were demolishing the Coast Guard cutter like it was a paper boat. Everyone on the bridge watched the attack in stunned silence.

Preparing to get the hell away from the overrun cutter, he took the call from the SenoRita. He looked to Suzanne and their newest addition. “Any ideas?”

Whit’s bronzed skin paled.

“You have any torpedoes aboard?” he said.

“Oh sure,” Tom replied. “We keep them with our nuclear-tipped guided missiles. Standard climatologist stuff.”

“Tom!” Suzanne snapped.

“Are those fish attracted to movement?” Ken asked. He needed an answer right away. The ship and the lives of everyone on board depended on it.

“No, not standard chimaera fish,” Whit said. “But those aren’t standard chimaeras.”

Bright flashes of light popped like fireflies all over the cutter’s deck as everyone aboard came out to repel the aggressive barrage.

Ken started the engine. “No matter. If your friends are in trouble, we can’t leave them out there.”

“Is there anything aboard we can use as a weapon?” Whit said.

Suzanne looked to be running down a mental checklist. “We have flares and gaffing poles. Oh, and Shirley’s gun that may have a few bullets left.”

“I take it that we’re not talking a big gun?” Whit said.

“She keeps it in her purse.”

“Shit.” Whit pounded his fist on a table. “You a good shot, Tom?”

“I’ve been known to hit a bullseye from time to time,” Tom said, rising from his seat.

Ken could see the retreating SenoRita, along with the dozen or so fish hot on its tail. He’d rather be beating a path away from the fish, but no one deserved what was happening to the Coast Guard, especially a few unarmed men on a party fishing boat. Maybe there was a chance they could scare off the fish and both ships could tear ass back to the mainland.

“Tom, you get the flares and meet me at the bow,” Whit said. Tom bolted from the bridge.

“I’m coming with you,” Suzanne said.

“Stay in here. I don’t want to have to worry about you and try to shoot a target dipping in and out of the water.”

“You can’t tell me what to do,” she said.

“Look, we can replay the greatest hits from our marriage later. Right now, I need you to listen to me. These things won’t know how to react to fire. It looks like they hunt in groups. I need to get them to think chasing the SenoRita isn’t worth the effort…or the pain.”

“I can help!”

Ken was gaining on the SenoRita.

“There’s no time for a goddamn soap opera,” Ken barked. “Suzanne, I need you in here. Whit, happy hunting.”

The ichthyologist gave him an appreciative nod. Ken had never been divorced, but he knew how ugly things could get. They had enough drama to contend with at the moment. Suzanne was a strong-willed woman, but he knew he’d feel better if his ex-wife was safe while he did the dirty work.
