Mary Looks at Caesar

Thomas pushed past the creaking front door and stepped into the foyer. He had steeled his nerves all the way down Thayer, preparing himself for another lecture full of shaming recriminations from Elijah Creeper the Fifth. Instead, he found the foyer empty and a note from his father lying on the table by the Creeper diary.

Elijah Thomas,

I am headed to a conference today in New York. While I am away I trust that you will see to it that your tasks are completed on schedule and to the best of your abilities.…

There were a few words after abilities but they were scratched out. It was as if his father had wanted to say more on the subject but changed his mind at the last minute, for which Thomas was grateful.

Though I will not be here to check off your daily work, by now I trust we’ve come to an understanding about what is satisfactory and what is not. In the event of a delivery, Mort Shulling, who helped us when I had my gall bladder removed as you will recall, is on call to assist you.

Make sure your mother eats something.

Thomas crumpled the note into a ball and threw it on the floor. He peered down the hallway to the kitchen door, which had been propped open. His mother sat motionless at the kitchen table, her back to the door, just as she had been when he left the house. He should go and talk to her, he thought. It was what a good son would do, not a son who hated his life as Thomas did, and who confessed at particularly miserable times that he didn’t like his parents much, either. It was a horrible, worthless feeling. But it hung around, like a cold in his heart.

An hour later, sprawled on his bed, munching on Stroher’s hard pretzels, he carefully fished out the enchanted glasses from his pocket.

He regarded them now as a highly dangerous item—like a pair of snake fangs that still held a drop of venom, or a device that could be used to trigger a bomb. He turned the eyeglasses over in the lamplight, examining them closely. They seemed ordinary enough, with their round lenses and wire-rimmed frames. They were clearly from a different time period for sure, but didn’t seem all that magical at first glance. Feeling strangely drowsy, his mind started to wander…

Then a beep from his iPhone announced a new e-mail. The sound startled him awake. His own glasses lay in his lap, and he had just been about to put the enchanted, wire-rimmed spectacles on his nose. He didn’t even remember taking them off or deciding to put the magic ones on. He shivered, then placed the enchanted spectacles on the far side of his dresser table.

Swiping the iPhone screen, he brought up the e-mail app. A message from Jeni waited in his inbox. The subject line was typed in capital letters URGENT! PLEASE READ! I’M SERIOUS, PROFESSOR!

I hope you get this tonight! I was right to grab the diary.
