Chapter Eighteen
âI told you I wanted a minute with Jerry,â Taz said as she pulled on her bra and shirt in the bathroom. Ivy had turned their father around long enough that Jerry could reach for her bra and shirt and hand it to her as she raced to the bathroom and slammed the door.
She returned a moment later, her face burning, and Ivy wore an expression that was both horror and amusement. Jerry was now standing, hands on hips, and Taz couldnât look his way, because her father had just walked in on her with a guy whoâd been, what, feeling her up?
A lock was what she needed.
âYou know what, Dad?â she said. âItâs not okay for you to just walk in here.â
Jerry was gesturing to her. âItâs fine, Taz.â
âGo with your sister,â Robert said without turning her way, and Jerry didnât appear worried in the least. She was horrified, yet Jerry appeared ready to face her dad and accept whatever was coming. âIvy,â her dad finally said, still not turning their way, but it was said in a tone she hadnât heard in a long time.
âCome on, Taz,â Ivy said. Her sister had her arm and somehow had her outside, pulling the door closed.
âWhat were you doing walking in with Dad?â Taz whispered loudly, and Ivy gripped her arm again and led her down the step and around the side, away from the cottage. She glanced back at the door.
âWe all knew when you left with Jerry where you were going. Dad saw you and said you took him to your cottage. Scarlett made a crude remark about wondering what kind of kisser Jerry was, and I saw the seed that little shit planted on Mom and Dadâs faces. He said he was going to go on over and check on you, so I said Iâd go with himâand I did my very best to make as much noise as I could, short of yelling out, âGee, Taz, if youâre half naked, Dadâs on his way over, so get your frickinâ clothes on!ââ she whispered loudly and then burst out laughing. âOh, you should have seen your face, and your guy was quick, covering you up like that. Iâm impressed. Shows class. Not sure Dad will see it that way.â She reached over and tapped Tazâs shoulder lightly, teasingly, and winked. âJust think, twenty, thirty years from now, youâll look back on this and laugh.â
Taz couldnât help glancing back to her cottage as they walked, wondering what her dad could be saying to Jerry. She still needed a moment, because on top of everything, she was reeling from what heâd said.
âWhat is it? You have this odd look on your face.â Ivy turned to the house and back to her as if checking around to make sure no one was lurking anywhere.
âItâs what Jerry said right before you and Dad walked in.â
Ivy, of all her sisters, had the most expressive eyes, and when she was laughing at Taz, it showed there first and in her smile next.
