Chapter Eleven
The sun moved from directly overhead toward the west as the hours passed by. Weâd long passed that scratch in the dirt that we were hoping was made by cougar claws. After finding that scratch, Iâd pulled out my phone a few times to check the time and found we were heading into late afternoon. As I pulled my phone out again to get a time update, I saw a text from Mom.
Dinner is at 6
With it being a little after four already, we were going to have to turn back right away and take a shortcut if I was going to make it for dinner. My stomach rumbled as I thought of dinner. I really should have packed more than just granola bars. Then again, I didnât know Iâd be sharing what little food Iâd brought...
I sighed and looked ahead at Logan. He was still leading us down the path like he had some secret cougar-finding knowledge. But he was as useless as me. A dead deer and a scratch in the dirt that was maybe a footprint ... this whole hunt had been pointless. Sure, weâd found a few things, but they were barely signs of a cougar. I expected to find far more, even if I wasnât exactly sure what those things would be ... droppings, maybe? In any case, we hadnât found anything of real importance. We were probably in the complete wrong part of the woods. For all we knew, the cougar was currently tracking us from the other side of the stream, but our attention was so focused on this side of the stream that weâd missed the cougar all day.
Though I didnât actually think there was a cougar stalking us from the other side of the stream, now that the thought was in my head, I had to look to my right. Though I couldnât see the stream from where we were, I could see a break in the trees and could hear the burbling water. I looked past that break and into the dark woods beyond, hoping for some glimpse of the deadly animal. Or, truthfully, I was slightly relieved that I didnât see anything.
I wanted to find and kill the cougar so that we wouldnât lose the farm â so I wouldnât lose Thunder â but a small part of me acknowledged Loganâs point earlier. What the hell were two sixteen-year-olds who have never hunted game before doing pursuing a vicious cougar? Of course, I would never tell Logan that I agreed with his point. His ego was already big enough.
âLogan,â I called out to him.
He stopped and looked over his shoulder. âYeah?â
âWe should give up for the day. I need to get home.â
His shoulders sagged a little bit, like he was disappointed that I wanted to call it quits. Surely, he had to get home for dinner too. âOkay,â he said. âBut letâs just go a little further.â
I thought about the lecture I would get from my mom if
