‘Twas a damp, misty morn that greeted the warriors and the lass. They ate a bit of the meat they’d taken the day before and set off for the castle. Malcolm felt as though he couldna get there soon enough. He desperately needed to have his arm looked at.

No sight would make him smile more than the castle rising from the floor of the valley as they rode over the last hill.

Home.

The sound of the horses riding across the drawbridge that had been lowered brought him a sense of relief. The portcullis rose, and they rode into the outer bailey.

It took all of Malcolm’s remaining strength to slide from his horse. He felt warm and chilled at the same time. He needed to find the healer and take to his bed. “Where is my wife?” he asked as Ainslee and Maura walked up to him.

The two women looked at each other. Ainslee cleared her throat, her hands twisting. “She’s no’ here, Malcolm.”

Surely, he misheard her. “Did she return to our house?” He would certainly give the lass a talking to. She was told to stay at the castle.

“Nay,” Maura said. “She left for Balnagown, her da’s castle.”
