All through breakfast, Tilly goes on and on about her flat. She won’t give it a rest.

“It’s not breaking and entering if it belongs to me.”

“When they catch you, you can tell them that,” I say, spooning up porridge with a twinge of homesickness. They’ve sprinkled raspberries on top and it reminds me of Dad offering to do the same. “But hang on – they won’t catch you, will they, Tilly? It’ll be me getting arrested.”

“We don’t need to break in, silly – I told you I have a spare key. It’s wrapped in a John Lewis bag and stuffed into the bottom of one of the ground floor window boxes.”

“That sounds super secure.”

“Totally,” agrees Tilly. She never gets when I’m being sarcastic. “I hid it there as a precaution after I locked myself out one night. You know, a few too many apple martinis with the girls and I had to sleep in Tanika’s spare room. Totally gross having to go home in last night’s clothes. After that, I made sure I had a back-up plan.”

“Does your Aunt Lulu know where you kept the spare key?” I ask, tipping tablets into my palm.

“Absolutely not!” Tilly looks horrified. “She’d have given me hell, especially after her arguing with the other trustees and telling them how sensible and mature I was.”

“What about Georgie?”

Tilly shakes her head. “I never told a soul, not Georgie, not even Bea and Tans.”

“OK, so even if we can get in, what if someone comes when we’re there?”

“Like who? Aunt Lulu’s in Barbados and Georgie hasn’t been round to the flat. Like she said – it upsets her too much.” Her bottom lip trembles.

“Yeah, right before she said she’d have to come round and sort your stuff because there’s no one else to do it.”

“That’s all talk. Georgie’s the worst procrastinator on the planet, just like her mum. It’ll be months before those two turn up. Pretty please, Jess?” Tilly wheedles. “There are a few things I’d like you to shred for me.”

Now I’m intrigued. “Like what?”

“Diaries and so on detailing one or two boys Aunt Lulu wouldn’t have approved of. And you could delete a few photos off my laptop – I wouldn’t want to tarnish her perfect memories of me.”

“Go on, then.” I dump my empty bowl and roll off the bed. “We’ll just go and see if the key’s still there.”

“Why not take your lovely new overnight bag?” Tilly dances over to the horrible holdall we bought in Geneva. “We can always come back for the rest of your things later.”

“Fine.” I fling pants, socks and a shedload of tablets inside. “But I’m not checking out of this place until we know we can definitely get into your flat.”

“No offence, sweetie, but I think we should get a cab,” Tilly suggests as we ride down in the lift. “It’s only down the road but you do look rather out of puff again.”

“I’m just stressed about going to Leo’s house later,” I say, wondering for the millionth time how I’ve ended up in this situation.
