SHE JUMPED, somehow not expecting him to really do it. Certainly not expecting the way he made himself at home.

He didn’t grope, which was something of a trick given his position and hers. No, it was more like a tickle, a tease, rubbing her skirt against her panties with just enough friction to make her gasp.

“Warm,” he said, his eyelids lowering to half-mast.

She swallowed, remembered to breathe. “I, uh, thought you said there was dessert.”

“There is.”

She closed her eyes. It was an effort not to grab his wrist, stop the intimate rubbing. Not because she wasn’t enjoying it, but there was a large element of oddness to the situation, which made her self-conscious. She wasn’t sure what she was supposed to do. Lean back, and let him go to town? Continue to eat as if he wasn’t touching her right there? Reach over and return the favor?

Luke solved the problem for her. Never pausing with his left hand, he twirled some pasta with his right, then lifted the fork. She pulled the bite off with her lips, and chewed. Even though she was incredibly preoccupied, she still swooned at the perfect sauce. She moaned with pleasure, from the food as well as his touch. But she still had to force herself not to stop him.

“You like?”

She nodded. “But…”

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“Come on, Megan. It’s obviously something.” He stopped moving his fingers. “Am I making you uncomfortable?”

She hesitated. She wanted him to stop, and she didn’t.

“Truth,” he whispered.

She gazed into his eyes, and his openness swung the vote. “All right,” she said. “Truth. I’m not sure what to do here. And I don’t seem to be able to relax the way I’d like to.”

He didn’t say anything. He simply moved his hand back to the top of her thigh. Then he leaned slowly toward her until his lips brushed against her own. Lingering there, his warm breath slipping inside her, he said, “We’ll pick this up later.” He kissed her again, harder, and then he leaned back.

“Thank you,” she said.

“No problem. We’ve got the rest of the night to find things we both want to do.”

“It’s not that I didn’t like it-”

He held up a hand. “It’s okay. I mean it. I’m glad you said something. I want the truth. My ego, while larger than it should be, is surprisingly capable of handling the fact that not everything I do is magic.”

“You’re not off by much.”

“Good.”

“For the record, I’d just like to say that I’m having an excellent time.”

“Even better.”

She patted his leg, then had another sip of wine.

“Do you want some more pasta?”

“I do, but then I won’t have room for dessert.”

“Ah, okay. Good point.” He stood, went to the wet bar and picked up a plate that she hadn’t seen in the sink. “Dessert.”

“What is it?”

He came back to the table, moved his plate and hers to the other side of the table, then uncovered the new dish with a flourish.

Two slices of a gorgeously dark, rich chocolate cake sat between beautifully sculpted butter cream roses.
