Chapter 7

Royal Assassin

In the coming days, as the moon phased from black to full, the crowds prepared for their naval voyage, and soldiers lay ambush to the advancing French, Bronia Magnahul and Rylen Hagan spent every moment they could trying to decipher what it was that the fates had dealt them.

The Gray Lens flickered to life a few more times in those days before fading out once again. When it did come on, it seemed to recognize and identify Bronia. He had been given a glimpse into the future and was now aware of who Bronia would become. It was a secret that he kept close to his chest. The data stream to his lens was minimal and sporadic, but it was there. Not only did it tell him who several the Clan members were to become, but it also confirmed his suspicion that the time trunks were colliding.

The night she was to depart for Inverness, she asked to see the Gray Lens while it flickered to life. With some hesitation, Rylen let her put it on. Pointed in his direction the lens identified Hagan and printed his name at the bottom of the lens. The technology convinced her of his status as an alchemist. There was no other way to see it.

She removed the Alchemist’s mask, as she had started to call it, being unable to wrestle with the supernatural implications of it. It was the first time Hagan was treated to the side of her that behaved like a little girl. The contrast was stark but welcome. Until now he had only seen the hard shell of an assassin.

The conversation of the evening progressed rapidly and approached more serious matters. On the eve of battle, the harsh realities of consequence began to emerge in the minds of all those who could think beyond their belly. The impending battle was exactly what her father had worked to prevent, but now it was upon them. Hagan bit his tongue, he wanted to assure her that what her father did here and now had significant effects on the world beyond their own time.

Hagan explained to her that a world that did not have her father in its history was a very different one. It had destroyed itself over greed and ruined the planet. In the world where Adelstan Magnahul was absent the seas covered the lands, snow was not to be found, and the air was filled with hot dust.

The cause for which her father fought for was one that would change that. Bronia was proud that the man who bounced her on his knees less than two decades ago and whose pleated red beard she played with as a little girl was the man who would save the world she had not seen.

For her part, the news she brought to the table related to her dreams. They had increased in frequency. Clarissa appeared more times and in different ways than before. It was no longer limited to the reflection in the water.
