Sixteen

Ryan’s presence at the bar sends a ripple of tension through me, along with another feeling I’ve never had before. His eyes briefly meet mine before he heads to the other side of the bar for a drink.

Seeing the shift in my demeanor, Mac turns to look at what has my attention. He frowns. “I think I should head out. Give you some space to think.”

I nod, watching Mac leave. My heart races slightly as I contemplate approaching Ryan. This could be the perfect opportunity to gauge how he might fit into our investigation. But am I ready to take that step?

Taking a deep breath, I steel myself and stand up. It’s time to face this head-on. I make my way towards Ryan, my mind a whirlwind of thoughts and possibilities. This interaction could change the course of our investigation, and I need to tread carefully.

As I approach Ryan, I remind myself to balance professionalism and the budding personal connection that’s been unexpectedly forming between us. This decision isn’t just about the case anymore; it’s about how his involvement might alter the dynamics of our team and my own internal conflicts.

Stepping up to him, I clear my throat. “Agent Stewart, fancy seeing you here.”

He turns, a hint of expecting my arrival on his face. “Agent Wells, I didn’t expect to see you outside of work.”

I manage a small smile, finding a surprising ease in his presence. “Life’s full of surprises, Agent Stewart,” I sit beside him at the bar. The din of the bar fades into the background as we engage in conversation.

“So, what brings you here tonight?” I ask, trying to sound casual, even as my mind races with thoughts about how to broach the subject of our investigation.

Ryan takes a sip of his drink, his gaze thoughtful. “Just needed some time to unwind, you know. It’s been quite a day.” He pauses, then adds with a light chuckle, “Plus, it’s a good place to catch up on local gossip and unwind a bit.”

I nod, understanding the sentiment. “Yeah, it’s been a day for us too.”

I accept the beer from the bartender, telling him to add Ryan’s order to the tab I already have going. With his memory not being erased, I wonder how long it will be before he brings up what he witnessed.

“Let’s get a table,” he says, indicating the empty one on the other side of the room from where Patricia and Barrett still sit.

We get situated in chairs on the opposite side of the table. Neither of us talks, the silence heavy with a tension that’s as much about the unsaid as it is about the electricity that seems to crackle in the air between us.

“How about this? We don’t talk about today.” He turns his head slightly, a sly smirk playing on his lips as if he knows a secret that I’m still oblivious to. “What is your favorite television show of all time?”

“My all-time favorite television show….” Obviously, I can be honest, pushing the issue of who I really am, or I can pick something he would know.
