Throughout this book, Iâve suggested that the presence of a group of friends and helpers is something typical of the female hero. But you also find something very similar in that most male of genres, the war film. In her book The World War II Combat Film (1986), Jeanine Basinger writes about the âcollection of misfitsâ that are often assembled for a mission in a war film to become a âcoherent fighting group.â âThese men obviously represent the American melting pot, but the representation is not a simple-minded one. Our strength is our weakness and vice-versa. We ... [have] separate special interests, raised, as we are, to believe in the individual not the group. At the same time, we bring different skills and abilities together for the common good, and from these separate needs and backgrounds we bring a feisty determination. No one leads us who is not strong, and our individualism is not set aside for any small cause. Once it is set aside, however, our group power is extreme.â
Basinger also lists some of the character roles found within such a group â hero, heroâs adversary, father figure, comic relief, peace-lover, minority and immigrant representatives, noble sacrifice, and the duo of an old man and a youth. These all perform specific functions in the story and many of them are likely to die in action. The men in this group also form a sort of family and, when not on the battlefield, engage in activities and relationships reminiscent of a family home.
