DENMAN ARENA

Vancouver’s hockey history began in 1911 when the Denman Arena was built at Denman and West Georgia Streets. Because of the city’s moderate climate, even in winter there were no natural ice surfaces on which to learn to skate and play hockey. Frank and Lester Patrick, professional hockey brothers from Quebec, came west to remedy the situation. Using money from their father’s lumber business, the brothers founded the Pacific Coast Hockey Association and built arenas in Vancouver, New Westminster, and Victoria to support the league. The Denman Arena was Canada’s first indoor ice rink, and with a capacity of more than 10,000 was the second-largest indoor sports facility after New York’s Madison Square Gardens. The arena was home to the Vancouver Millionaires, which won Vancouver’s first and only Stanley Cup there in 1915. The Denman Arena burned down in 1936.116
