When Simone awoke sometime after noon, Kael had gone. She rolled over, got out of bed and shuffled into the bathroom.

“He’d better be out getting me some breakfast,” she grumbled as she stepped under the water.

When she got out some minutes later, she pulled her hair into a simple knot at the base of her neck and pulled on some light clothes, leaving off the shoes. She frowned down at her toes when she saw how badly she needed a pedicure. Her nails were a mess too.

Her apartment was empty and there was a one line note from Kael on the kitchen table that thanked her for the morning and said he’d be in touch later. She frowned and then shrugged. At least the man left a note. But if they were going to make their relationship work, he’d need to develop some manners.

She picked up the phone and called Lee’s.

“Hello?”

“Hey, Em. You and Red fancy grabbing a manicure and pedicure with me? It’s still full daylight.”

“Simone! Only you would want to get a mani-pedi at a time like this,” Em said, laughing.

“Look, just because the world is under threat yet again is no excuse to start looking like hell. My nails are chipped from that night in the alley and my toes are equally thrashed. In case you hadn’t noticed, it’s sandal season!”

“Fine! It’s been a while since I got my nails done. It’ll give us something to do until dark when they all go off again. Con is out there now, tracking.” Em sighed and suddenly was standing in Simone’s kitchen with Lee.

Simone looked up and laughed. “Hey, y’all. I know they’ll be able to fit us in. Let’s get on it. Max is downstairs, we need to bring him with us or we’ll get creamed by the guys.”

They tromped downstairs and saw that Max was there with Jagger.

“Morning, boys,” Simone said. “Have you eaten yet, Max? I know you slept in the back room even though you are more than welcome upstairs in my guestroom. There’s food in the kitchen down here but I don’t want you starving yourself because you won’t leave.”

“Yes, ma’am. I had a nice breakfast some time ago, and even a snack. I was getting hungry again, though.”

“Hello, Jagger, what are you doing here?” Simone asked.

“Kael wanted me to keep an eye out for you. I hope you don’t mind.”

“Well, and Kael is where?”

“He had some errands to run. Ammo to deal with. We make our own silver bullets, you know, and we need graphite.”

“Uh, no. I didn’t know that. Can I watch?” Cool beans, silver bullets!

“It’s kind of complicated, I don’t know…”

“Oh I see, I must be stupid.”

“Oh, I never said that!”

“No, but you felt it. Never mind. Max, can you please escort us up the road a piece to my nail shop?” Simone turned her back on Jagger, cutting him off. She was seething inside. He reached out to touch her, to try and apologize, but Em grabbed his hand, giving a hard shake of her head.
