Chapter 4 - Vice President of the United States

“Donald Trump is a good man, and he will make a great president of the United States of America.” – Mike Pence

Soon after announcing his decision to run for a second term as governor of Indiana, Pence remained in the spotlight due to his nomination as the vice-presidential candidate for the Republican presidential nominee in the 2016 election, Donald Trump. To be able to join Donald Trump in the campaign, Pence had to drop out of the gubernatorial re-election campaign that took place in July 2016 in Indiana. Despite Pence having opposed some of Trump’s views in the past, he was considered a suitable running mate for Trump, especially due to his connections in Congress and a strong reputation among conservatives. Donald Trump announced his choice for the vice-presidential nominee on July 14, 2016, and declared, a day later, during a press conference, that he considers Pence “a man of honor, character, and honesty.” Even though Donald Trump was still a controversial figure in the Republican Party, receiving both support and vehement criticism, Pence preferred to remain composed and moderate in his acceptance speech and spoke in a favorable light about Trump.

On November 8, 2016, Donald Trump and Mike Pence won the presidential election against the Democratic candidates Hillary Clinton and Tim Kaine. Most working class and blue-collar Americans saw in this unexpected victory of Trump and Pence an unquestionable rejection of establishment politics, which will bring great changes in the life of the United States.

Mike Pence's election night speech was a short and sweet affair compared to the lengthy election night. Pence said:

“This is a historic night. The American people have spoken and the American people have elected their new champion. America has elected a new president and it's almost hard for me to express the honor that I and my family feel that we will have the privilege to serve as the vice president of the United States. I come to this moment deeply humbled, grateful to God for his amazing grace, grateful to my family: my wonderful wife Karen, our son Michael, and his fiancée Sarah, our daughter Audrey far away, and our daughter Charlotte. I could not be here without them and I'm deeply grateful to the American people for placing their confidence in this team and giving us this opportunity to serve. And I'm mostly grateful to the president elect whose leadership and vision will make America great again.”
