Each character in Telltale Game’s The Walking Dead is scripted so that a deeper back story is suggested and alluded to in the game. By offering glimpses of a precursor life outside the current narrative the characters become more nuanced and their motivations for in-game actions seem more easy to relate to for the player. It is also a subtle way for the developers to suggest how the character should be played based on insights into their back story.

Relationships between in-game characters can be used to add emotional depth and resonance to a story. Believable relationships reflect the reality we know and add more tension when characters are put into peril. The Last of Us connected with many players and critics because it explored the emotional growth of a man (Joel) tasked with protecting a surrogate daughter – Ellie) despite his reluctance to become involved because of the loss of his own daughter. Although these are character tropes echoed in literature and film, it is still rare for video games to add this level of depth to characters.
