Chapter 11 – The Human Key

The red health bar in the corner of my left eye has fully restored by the time the first of our ‘outdoor’ party reappears at reception. The same can’t be said for Gustav, who’s sat on the floor at my feet with his arms behind his back and cable ties, courtesy of Arturo, around his thick wrists. He’s got a sorry-looking red ‘60%’ above his head.

“You got him?” Adara grins at me.

“Yeah, how about you? Everyone OK?”

“Pretty much,” a bloodied Carl says but Bianca is with him and one side of her face is swollen.

“Where are the other guys?” Margot asks. Her top is torn open showing a pale blue bra.

“Out back, helping Arturo dispose of the bodies,” I’m already on my feet heading to Bianca. “What happened to you?” I ask and stare at the bruising on her beautiful face, “that looks sore.”

“Oh, p-lease,” Dahleen groans from somewhere behind me.

“It’s only a graze,” Bianca shakes her golden head.

“And we’ve got more to worry about than Bianca’s pretty face,” Carl says. “one of them got away. Tony and Zoe took off after him.”

Shit. “You get their radio?”

Adara holds it up.

“At least he won’t be able to call ahead and warn the castle,” I look away, thinking fast. “That’s where he’ll be headed. We’re gonna have to beat him back there no matter what.” I check the clock on the wall.

“So now what?” Bianca asks.

“You all die,” Gustav says from the ground then laughs.

“Put a sock in it, pig!” Rachel plants one of her trainers in his face.

He gasps and blood dribbles from his nose.

“You did kind of ask for that Gus. Anyway, we clean him up,” I say, “then a couple of us take him in the jeep, get him to radio ahead to the castle, and tell them to let us in with him. Say he got injured out here and we’re the good Samaritans that came to his rescue, and brought him home.”

“Well let’s hope he can still talk,” Bianca frowns at Rachel.

“And the guys in the castle won’t wonder where the rest of his men are?” Carl gives me a dubious look.

How come I’ve suddenly got this guy questioning my decisions now too?

“Gustav will tell them his men are still out fighting. And that he also brought prisoners back with him.”

“Who’s taking him back?” Carl asks, “I don’t think Bianca should go. Not with her injury.”

This guy is starting to annoy me now. Boat or no boat.

“Too many of us will be overkill and look suspicious,” I say and glance around the rest of them. ”I’m thinking me and a couple of willing girls so that the ‘prisoner’ bit looks convincing. Tony and Zoe are likely to be up that way already. The rest stay here and wait. As soon as we’ve cleared the place we’ll be back.”

“And if you’re not?” Margot asks.

“Then I’d like to think you’ll come find us.”

“I’m a willing girl,” Dahleen raises an arm and gives me a knowing look, “I’m going with you.
