Our vocabulary of imagery in mass media has…shrunk as we have abandoned the interrogatory form for the knee-jerk affirmation and for quick resolutions to our dilemmas. The destruction of the Twin Towers made for riveting imagery, but resulted in a series of instant histories whose intent was to produce immediate icons of the event. These icons, revolving around an amalgam of the Christian cross and American flag-raising, were provided to replace doubt with the reward of instantaneous resurrection. We barely had time to grieve.

The managers of mass media, terrified of photography’s capacity for disquieting ambiguities and irresolvable questions, prefer to illustrate bromides…In the medium of the mass, at least for the moment, the photograph has started to closely resemble a caged bird.
