CHAPTER TEN

There was an open space behind the building that wasn’t helping their retreat. The higher vegetation was too far away to reach before the women rounded the corner of the building, so Rick dropped back and reached for the water that was just beyond. It answered his call readily, and he turned to face whatever the women would dish out.

The four women slowed their pace as they readied their volleys. Two were minor fire mages. He could see the building of flame between their palms as they began to form the fireballs they would throw, but it clearly wasn’t easy for them. If they’d been higher-level, their flames would already be shooting toward him.

Acolytes, then. Probably students of one of the others, brought along to learn, or be sacrificed. Evil mages weren’t known to be careful of the welfare of their students. Only the strongest—and most devious—survived in that world for long.

Rick focused on the two women in the center of the advancing line. One was summoning dark gray smoke that looked like pure evil, but he sensed his water could dissipate the smoke without much problem. He looked at the last woman.

She was clearly the most powerful and the leader of this little group. Her energy was an angry red. The deep red of blood. Rick snarled. Blood path mages were tricky and, depending on when they had last killed, could be incredibly strong.

She didn’t look that old, which could mean either that she was relatively new to this or that she was using part of her magic to keep herself artificially young. Either way, Rick was taking nothing for granted. The water was close, and it told him the moment Molly got into the reeds. That was when the fire mages lobbed their first fireballs.

Rick drew the water from the marsh, using it to form a shield over the area. The fireballs fizzled and died as they contacted the water. Those fire mages wouldn’t be setting this area alight. Not while Rick stood. If they persisted in trying, he would drown them.

“Try again, ladies,” he invited as the youngest-looking fire mage made a sound of frustration. Hot tempered, to go with her hot talent.

The smoke mage set loose with a nod from her leader with similar results. The smoke particles dissipated in the water, as did the magic behind them.

“I don’t know what you are, but you’re not leaving here alive,” the blood path mage spat. “I want the siren. I will have her power for my own. And yours.”

Rick tilted his head. “I think not. But, if it’s death you want, I can oblige you.”

He shuddered to think of a blood path mage leeching the siren power from Molly along with her life blood. What an evil woman would do with such power didn’t bear thinking about. Whatever happened, he couldn’t allow this woman anywhere near Molly.

Rick let the water flow and engulf all four mages. He wouldn’t kill them. Not if they ceased attacking, but he wanted them to know he could, if they kept it up.
