FOR THE NEXT three days, we take refuge at New Hope Farm. Our airplanes and vehicles have been hidden behind the dairy barns, for the Klan is strong in these parts and might take notice.

The widow, Madeline LaChance, seems glad of the company. Although she has an accent from her birthplace in Quebec Province, some fifty miles to the north, her English is quite good. “A flying circus in our barns! Quelle surprise! My Armand would be so happy!”

Armand being her late husband, a lumberjack who carved pastures out of deep forest, one tree at a time, and against all odds made a dairy farm in the northern hills. They have three grown sons who work the farm and keep it pristine. One of them, Paul, brings the newspapers down from Jackman, the nearest village. The papers are filled with stories about what happened at the Skowhegan Fairgrounds.

Our airborne response to the Klan is the biggest story in the state and, according to the wireless, has gone nationwide.

As Jo explains, the reaction is both bad and good. Good because we humiliated the local Klan leader. Bad for the same reason.

“They’ll be out for revenge,” Jo confides. “Captain Merriman says we must post guards. He wants to end the season early, to be safe.”

“What does Ruthie say?”

Jo smiles. “Let’s just say she’s not in a quitting state of mind.”
