Malissa’s hand raised off of her badge, her gun, and a pair of handcuffs she had placed onto the chief’s desk. No one tried to stop her as she made her way out of the station. Lyta, the officer that in another lifetime had been the one Malissa had hoped would be her partner instead of Karen, mouthed a silent apology. Malissa didn’t stop her stride, but she did nod. It was appreciated, but she couldn’t stop.

She needed to be gone .

Blaming the chief would have been easy, but Malissa had been in the system for too long. She knew their decision didn’t really matter. Not really. There had been no solid evidence to explain, much less connect the disappearances… at least not enough to meet the arbitrary watermark required. Even if they were on the rise, and Malissa was spending every moment she could hunting for leads, there were no witnesses willing to actually talk or give any useful information at all.

There was no trail to follow. It had been cold before Malissa even started to look. Factors that would have motivated the system to move had all been carefully avoided. The disappearances didn’t happen in good neighborhoods. No one important was missing. Nothing important was stolen.

She wanted to take things into her own hands. She wanted to throw reason o the wind and tear the city apart until she got to the bottom of things, but if she couldn’t do that…

There was no way that she could keep wearing that badge.

What am I supposed to tell Karen’s family…? Her whole body shuddered as she finally made it out of the building, resting her face in her hands as she paused to collect her thoughts. Will her uncle still laugh? Would he be one of the people pretending there was no Karen to miss? So many people I’ve tried to interrogate have claimed ignorance of their former loved ones… What’s the point in protecting a city like this…?

Malissa shook her head as she made her way into her car. After resting her head on the steering wheel for a long time, she finally began to drive. It was longer than it should have been, feeling like a nearly endless ride. Somehow she kept missing the final turn, and made laps around her block again and again.

I just need to see a glimpse of something in a shadow… I just… I just need some idea of what’s happening, to this city, to Karen, to…

Eventually she made her way home. She couldn’t eat. She couldn’t sleep. She stayed awake late into the night, watching the news without hearing a word that anyone said or seeing anything that was shown.

It wouldn’t be a year until she was out of money, out of daytime leads, and finally foolish enough to venture into the night.

Before Karen disappeared, the rumors had all seemed too outlandish, too ridiculous, too much like an urban legend to be true.
