Discipline Strategies That Work

While there’s no one right way to discipline a toddler, there are several ways that work well. Which techniques you choose, and when you choose them, will depend on your toddler’s personality, your personality, and the specific set of circumstances.

DISCIPLINE METHODS

Here are some discipline methods you can try during this sometimes trying second year:

Win-Win Solutions

The best solutions to disputes allow everyone to emerge a winner—and that’s especially true with toddler-parent disputes. For example, if your mischievous tot tests you by first touching the flower arrangement on the table, then giving you a challenging glance and backing off, enough said. Your little one got to touch something offlimits (which is what he or she wanted), but didn’t go any further or do any damage (which is what you want). You both end up winners.

You can create win-win situations by using distraction (he or she goes for your Kindle, you go for the crayons and paper), humor, reverse psychology, and other creative approaches (such as setting a timer that will ring when the five minutes to dinnertime are up, signaling that it’s time to put down the blocks and come to the table). Everybody can end up a winner, too, when you do a little negotiating: “Take your bath right now, and then we’ll read your favorite book.” Just don’t let negotiations cross the line to bribes or threats. If your toddler is steadfastly refusing to get into the tub, don’t promise reading in return for cooperation or, conversely, threaten to revoke reading. When your child’s old enough to understand, you can explain that actions have consequences: “If you waste a lot of time now and take your bath late, there won’t be any time to read a story.”
