“You should come downstairs.”

Melissa hadn’t heard the door leading to the steps open, had no idea Dr. Steve was behind her.

“He’s awake?” Ruby asked uncertainly, her voice young and confused, like a young girl’s.

But Dr. Steve had already left.

Melissa turned, and she and Ruby glanced at each other, just long enough for each woman to notice the fear in the other’s eyes, not long enough to hold a gaze, not long enough for comfort.

Melissa followed Dr. Steve down, one hand on the railing and the other on the wall of the narrow stairway.

Ruby stayed in the kitchen.
