Paul made a copper engraving of the scene to spread the news of what happened. (Again, he made a copy of someone else’s drawing.) Hundreds of people in Boston bought prints of it.
British soldiers became an unwelcome part of life in town. They had orders not to start fights with the people of Boston. But tempers were hot on both sides. Fighting was bound to come. It was just a question of when.
Chapter 5
Blood Is Spilled
For a year and a half, Boston stayed calm. Then, on the snowy night of March 5, 1770, everything changed. It is not completely clear what started the clash. According to one account, a British soldier didn’t pay for repairs on a wig of his. A young shop boy chased after him, and a fight started between the two. Very quickly, a crowd of townspeople gathered to defend the young boy. British troops rushed to the aid of the soldier. The fighting grew more serious. Then, all of a sudden, shots rang out. British soldiers were firing into the crowd! They were shooting colonists! A moment later, four men lay dead in the snow. Another man died four days later.
