The phone was ringing when Toney walked in the door. Sitting her purse on the floor she sighed after looking at the caller id display. She picked up the extension in the foyer.

“Rajj, can I call you back in five minutes? I just walked into the door?” Toney was at the bottom of her stairs.

“No, I missed you all day. Just talk while you do whatever it is you need to do.” Rajj sat up on his sofa. “Are you there alone? Why are you trying to rush me off of the phone?”

“Yes, I’m alone. I left them back at the hotel.” She kicked her shoes off one at a time and left them sitting next to the bottom step as she climbed up to her bedroom to change into her night clothes. “I just wanted a moment to change out of my work clothes. Hold on.” Toney sat the phone down on the bed while she pulled on her pajamas. “I’m back, now, how was your day?”

“It would’ve been better if I’d been able to see you. But soon I won’t have that problem because we’ll be living here happily ever after.”

“You mean over here. My house is twice the size of yours. Why would I move in over there? Sweetheart, that doesn’t make any sense.” Toney picked up her book and propped herself up hoping their conversation would end soon so she could read before she went to bed.

“I don’t wanna live that far outside of the city. My condo is less than ten minutes from the office.” Rajj said.

“Yeah, and the extra ten minutes I drive would be unbearable?” Toney rubbed her temples hoping to stop the headache that was forming behind her eyes. “You know what I have had a tiring week. Let’s just have this conversation some other time. Will and Anthony want to know if you will be hanging out with us this weekend.”

“Since you are so tired how about I call you tomorrow and let you know.” Rajj said. His second line clicked. “Hold on.” He clicked over without looking at the caller id display or allowing Toney to respond. “Hello.”

“Rajj” Rosalyn said. “If you’re busy I can call you back later.”

“Yeah, stay up I’ll call you back.” Rajj clicked back to Toney. “Toney, I’ll call you tomorrow and let you know if I’m gonna go hangout with you and your boys.”

“If you are gonna have an attitude you can just stay at home. Good night Rajj.” Toney pushed the end button on her phone. She lay back and dove into her book.

Rajj picked up the phone and dialed star six nine. The operator announced the number and instructed him to call it by pressing two. Moments later the line was ringing. He heard a click and what sounded like someone sobbing.

“Hello,” Rajj said. “Candi, are you there?”

“I’m here. I called earlier to ask if I could come over. I really need some company tonight.” Rosalyn had already packed a bag and was sitting in her car two blocks from his condo.
