CHAPTER FORTY-ONE

Sahira would get up and leave if she had the energy. She couldn’t rely on or be indebted to Orin for anything. He’d only use it against her.

But she didn’t have the energy and desperately wanted answers about what was happening. The idea of having Orin in her room caused a clammy sweat to coat her body as her fingers twisted together.

Letting him in even a little could completely backfire on her. He always took an inch and tried to turn it into miles, but she didn’t have any other options, or at least not ones she could see.

She could challenge the witches and warlocks to the pit one at a time and try to take them all out. Her ability to teleport would have made this easier to do, but this realm had stripped it from her. So, she’d have to be sneakier in battle if she were to win.

Her first challenge would expect her to try to use her powers against them, but she wouldn’t. She’d use her dagger and go in for the kill.

It would work well against her first opponent but not for any of those who followed. Which meant she’d most likely die before she got through all thirty of her possible attackers.

The overwhelming helplessness of her situation wasn’t lost on her. When the enormity of it bared down on her shoulders, she almost allowed herself to become buried beneath the tumult of despair.

It would be so easy to give in to the sorrow trying to choke her, but she couldn’t. She had to stay strong, or she’d never get through this.

And she had to get out of this town.

Even if they discovered who was behind this—and she still wasn’t completely convinced it wasn’t Orin—there were too many witches and warlocks here to contend with. And more of them could arrive at any minute.

Each of those new arrivals could become a threat to her.

Besides, she couldn’t stay here and rot for eternity. She had to escape or at least try it.

Rising, she walked toward the window as her body protested every step and her head spun a little. Still, she compelled one foot in front of the other until she stood before the window.

With awkward movements, she opened the shutters and secured them before gazing out at the town that didn’t want her here but was determined to keep her. It rained sometime during the night, or maybe it was during the day.

It was the first time since her arrival here that rain had fallen, and its ozone scent against the sandy earth was a familiar, much-missed aroma from home. It, and probably her exhaustion and battered body, brought tears to her eyes that she blinked away.

Her gaze shifted toward the direction of the pit. She couldn’t see it, or what lay beyond, from here.

Sahira didn’t know if she was right, but she suspected she had to go that way to get out… or die.

But first, she had to heal, gather supplies, and prepare for what sounded like a treacherous journey.
