Not wanting to borrow from Candy’s wardrobe again, Sara wore the one good dress she’d packed, a simple white sheath, which she dressed up with a double strand of coral beads she’d found at a souvenir shop on the beach. When she stepped out of her bedroom, both Ellie and Candy whistled. “You look great,” Ellie said.“Are you going somewhere special?”

“Drew’s taking me out for seafood.”

“A real dinner date?” Candy looked up from where she was painting her toenails fire-engine red. “This sounds serious.”

“It’s not serious.” She fiddled with the beads, the rough coral sliding back and forth through her fingers. “I mean, it’s a vacation fling, right?”

“But sometimes flings turn into something more,” Ellie said. “At least, that’s what I hear.”

“I didn’t come here looking for something more,” Sara said. “I mean, I just want to have fun. To prove I don’t have to be serious all the time.”

“So have a fun, not-serious dinner,” Candy said.

“I really like Drew.” Sara sat on the edge of the sofa-bed, hands knotted in her lap. “He understands about my work and Uncle Spence and everything. He even has some of the same problems, running his surfing shop and looking after his grandfather.”

“If it’s meant to be, you’ll find a way to work it out,” Ellie said.

Easy for Ellie to say. She had such an easygoing, positive approach to life. But Sara had more doubts. Right now, she was having a hard time picturing her life without Drew in it. But was it the idea of going back to being celibate that she shied away from? Or a true reluctance to part from a man who had already come to mean so much to her?

“What happens in Malibu stays in Malibu,” Candy said. She switched to the nails on her other foot. “It’s why vacation romances are so exciting and intense—everything’s compressed into a short amount of time. But it’s hard to carry that into the real world.”

“I don’t want to think about any of that right now,” Sara said. “I just want to enjoy being with Drew.” Would things have been different if they’d met in Los Angeles? Their relationship likely wouldn’t have progressed so quickly. They might have gone on a few dates—if they could each juggle their schedules to allow that. Eventually they would have slept together—probably sooner rather than later, if the intensity of their attraction to each other was any indication. But they wouldn’t have had hours of free time to get to know each other as they had so far.

He was truly amazing. Would she have seen that if he had been a client who tried to date her, or a man she met during one of her infrequent nights on the town with friends? Certainly he wouldn’t resent her heavy work schedule the way some of the men she’d dated before had. After all, he had responsibilities of his own.

A horn honked and Sara stood and looked out to see Drew, in a red-and-white Mustang convertible.
