Chapter Fifteen

Emily

“You look absolutely rosy and bright,” Mimi said, eyeing me with a twinkle in her eyes. “I recognize that flush.”

I straightened in the dining room chair as I scooped mashed potatoes onto her plate. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Mimi chuckled. “Right, of course. You don’t have a thing to say about anything.”

I glanced at my grandpa, who was staring at the roast chicken on his plate, holding in a chuckle.

“Very funny, you two.”

Turning my attention back to Mimi, I drizzled gravy on her plate and handed it over.

“You might not have anything to say, but that hickey on your neck says otherwise.” It was like she just couldn’t contain herself. Mimi chuckled as my hand slapped the side of my neck where Lucas’s lips were just yesterday.

“I…” Taking a bite of chicken, I stared at my grandma and swallowed. “I don’t know what I was thinking.”

“Maybe that’s the problem. You think too much.” Mimi cast a glance at me before looking at my grandpa. “If you overthink love, it becomes too complicated.”

“Love?” I spat out. “I’m not in love.”

“From all accounts, you’ve been going back and forth with him for a year. I’m surprised he’s stuck around this long.”

I futzed around with my napkin on my lap. “We’re just friends, Mimi. I messed up and kissed him. My fault. He completely understands. Problem solved.”

“You know that your other Grandma and I didn’t particularly get along, right?”

This was something we all knew and pretended wasn’t the case. Mimi was more outspoken, while Grandma Cecilia thought carefully about words.

Meanings.

Implications.

They argued a lot when they were younger, or so I heard, but by the time we grandkids were old enough to notice, they’d ironed out their differences.

“But the one thing we agreed on wholeheartedly was you, our little wildflower.” She took a sip of wine. “You are patient like a wildflower, waiting for just the right conditions. Even when you were a child. You’d watch your siblings squabble and wait for them to hash things out before you got involved. You’d think with your heart, not your head with them.”

“I suppose that’s true.” I nodded.

“But you never ignored your heart, either, and that is something I don’t want you to forget. If you cut that off, you have nothing but a mind that sees only logic.”

I stared at her, unsure where she was going with this analogy.

“And logic will talk you out of things that could be quite good for the heart.”

A smile touched my lips.

“The wilds of the heart are a special thing. Listen to these whispers. Let those whispers become shouts when it’s a matter of the heart.”

“That’s true,” my grandpa agreed.

“It’s okay to go a little crazy, do wild things. You’ve never let things stop you before.” She smiled at me. “I know I’m your grandma, and you probably don’t want to take advice on your love life from an old lady.”

“Not true,” I assured her.

“But what’s the worst that could happen if you listened to your heart instead of your head?”

I sat quietly for a few seconds.
