Sylvie

In the circus tent, Sylvie woke with a start. Her head was thumping, and her arms ached from being hitched up higher than her head. She blinked and looked around.

Why was she still here? Where the hell was Penley?

Ophelia was trussed up in an equally awkward position. She watched Sylvie calmly, as if she was resigned to her fate.

“Sleep well?” Ophelia said with a grim smile.

Sylvie grunted. “Not possible.” She yanked on the chains.

When Ophelia turned away, Sylvie attempted a little magic. It sparked up in her hands then the ball of light fizzled into nothing.

“I wouldn’t do that if I were you,” said Ophelia, turning to face her. “If the owner gets a hint that you can do more, he will put you on display, like us.”

Sylvie widened her eyes. “I thought you were mortal... I mean human. You said there was only one other magical being before.”

“I lied. We are halflings. Our bloodline is a mixture of two magical beings. Hence some of our unusual appearances—hunched posture, scaly skin, excessive hair growth—in my case, deep scarring over most of my body. Our magic was bound the moment we got trapped in this mortal realm. The owner knows powerful people and he pays them to lure many of us from our realm into this one.”

Sylvie didn’t know what to say. She’d never heard of that happening before. At least not in her time. Had this been a thing they did? Was this one of the ‘additions’ the fortune teller had mentioned?

Who might be strong enough to lure the halflings here? A sorceress, perhaps?

Sylvie slumped as far as the chain would allow. “It doesn’t matter anyway. I don’t have any power left.”

“You took some from the fortune teller, yes?”

“I think so. I’m not sure.”

“But you had magic before?”

Sylvie nodded. The others looked at her, deep sadness in their eyes.

She sat up straighter. “I know powerful beings. I can get us out of here.” She felt somewhat responsible for their predicament. Her and Penley’s interactions in the past could have created a greedy desire in some powerful being to pull these halflings from their realm.

Ophelia laughed softly. “If that were the case, surely you would have been rescued by now?”

Sylvie slumped against her chains a second time.

Ophelia bit her lip, leaned in closer. “If you can catch the attention of the owner, you will have the opportunity to break your binds. In his chambers, he says no bindings are permitted.”

“How do I get into his office?”

“You must make yourself desirable.”

Sylvie looked down at her disheveled clothes that needed a good wash and darning in places where the fabric had torn. There was one way to attract a red-blooded man’s attention in this time—in any time. She tore her bodice a little, to show more cleavage.

Then she waited.
