“Wake up, recruit.” Someone kicked his boot.

“Mm?” Ren blinked, lying in sand. He felt his throat swallowing the last of something sweet, and an energizing warmth trailed through his body.

“Thanks.” He murmured, feeling a headache. His teeth felt weird and out of place, but as he sat up both feelings went away. His thoughts gathered and he spat out spines of wood.

“You pass. Now collect your sword and get out.” A mage said, standing over him with an empty bottle. Ren saw their hood and recognized their rank.

“Yes, initiate.” Ren said, but he checked his body first. Oddly, there was no pain, and as he ran his fingers along his side he found no damage to mention.

No wounds? He thought, but the initiate narrowed their gaze over him; a subtle warning to hurry.

Ren got to his feet, shook off the sand and gathered his sword. As he walked out he noticed the holes in his clothes.

“Worry about new clothes after you complete the trial.” The initiate said, and pointed down the hall.

Ren nodded and began walking, but as he checked over his cloak he didn’t find any holes. Unlike his clothes, it was imbued with magic.

Oh yeah, the self-repair, Ren thought; he had already cut the cloak a few times in his years at the academy.

Before entering the trial’s he made sure to hold his cloak shut so no one could see his blood stained his clothes or the holes in them—but it did nothing to hide the coating of blood running from his lips and down his chin, painting his neck red; he hadn’t wiped it off because he hadn’t realized it.

Ren walked into the sub-hall, he had been getting stares from other recruits after he got the silver feather, but now their gazes were different. Eyes widened and mouths broke agape as they saw him coming. With a bloody neck and mouth, he looked like a cannibal that belonged outside the walls, not an esteemed student of the magic academy—but the silver badge on his cloak kept them quiet. Despite being much younger than them, his steps held much more weight, and as he passed by only hushed whispers of speculation guessed what kind of life he had lived to become so barbaric.

As he walked through the hall back to the main chamber, some of the entering students even turned around, deciding that the test of steel was a pursuit of madness—of course, they waited till Ren had passed by before leaving. They didn’t want that monster following them or picking up their scent.

Back in the grand hall, Ren surveyed the other recruits for a moment. Numbers of them were going in and out of the test of spells, and most of those who came out did so with smiling faces. It was clearly easier, and they favored those with offensive abilities.

Few went into the test of steel, and those who did likely had no choice—possessing systems like Ren’s which offered no offensive spells, at least at level one.
