In saying all of this, imposter syndrome isn’t all bad and we shouldn’t try to stamp it out entirely, provided it’s not interfering with our actions too much. We can, instead, work on our perception of imposter syndrome and turn it around so it works for us rather than against us. You can choose to own it.

Why? Because . . .

If you don’t have any idea about what you are doing, you are in good company. If you know exactly what you are doing at all times, you’re not taking any risks, which means you won’t make mistakes from which you learn and develop confidence.

If you feel as though you’re on shaky ground, you’re challenging yourself and testing the boundaries of your comfort zone.

Sometimes, it’s better to underestimate your abilities than to overestimate them, as this means you’ll be neither disappointed nor overly confident.

People with high imposter-minded tendencies tend to have a strong sense of humility, which is an affable trait.

Remember, it’s the flip-side to a personality that is driven to experience new things and self-improve. I am motivated by personal development, which means I will always be trying something new. More than someone who is happy in their comfort zone, I’m going to feel uneasy and unsure of what I’m doing.

It’s incredibly normal to feel like you don’t belong outside your comfort zone, but remember, this is the learning zone and good things can happen here.

If someone has never felt like a fraud, not ever, they’re probably the one who’s the most incompetent.

If you possess the self-awareness to be able to think that you might be a fraud, you’re probably not one. It’s like worrying about going insane. Remember, those who are truly incompetent (or insane) rarely spend time worrying about it. This is the proven Dunning-Kruger effect, discovered in 1999 when David Dunning and Justin Kruger from Cornell University tested whether people who lack the skills or abilities for something are also more likely to lack awareness of their lack of ability. They tested people’s ability to analyze their own abilities by setting tests, such as logical reasoning and grammar. Their tests found that those people who performed the worst were also the worst at estimating their own aptitude.44 So, you’re probably fine.
