Chapter 7

Mercy’s apartment on Rig 9 was not at all how Thalcu had imagined it. When Mercy first told Thalcu of the apartment, they had been living together on Kahz after Thalcu was forced to marry Zycun Zel. Knowing what she’d known of Mercy at the time, she had imagined a grungy little apartment with a broken toilet and cracked wallpaper and large pests—not because Mercy was poor but because Mercy seemed to enjoy squalor.

In fact, Mercy had always given Thalcu every reason to believe she was extensively wealthy. When they were living on Kahz, Mercy had encouraged Thalcu to spend Zycun Zel’s money but had typically spent her own money on herself. She always had expensive hand weapons, expensive phones, nicely tailored clothes, even if they were something as simple as a leather jacket and jeans. Thalcu supposed it made sense now that she knew Mercy’s real age: someone that old would have racked up quite the savings account.

Thalcu thought about telling Varzo her suspicions, but Mercy didn’t seem to want Varzo to know just how wealthy she was. At least, she didn’t seem ready to divulge the information. And so, out of respect for Mercy’s feelings, Thalcu hadn’t told Varzo that their pitiful “nest egg” that they were saving for their life together was like pocket change to Mercy, who could have bought Varzo an entire planet if she’d asked.

Mercy’s apartment on Rig 9 only confirmed Thalcu’s suspicions. It was a luxury apartment with white ceilings and floors and wall-length windows that let in streams of sunlight. The kitchen had all the latest technology: food synthesizers, auto dishwashers, and trash compactors. There were also three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a hot tub, and the entire apartment was run by a virtual intelligence that had been programmed to look after it in her absence.

They all rushed through the door, Mercy set Thalcu on her feet, and then she ordered the VI to lockdown the apartment. Thalcu watched with a sense of dread as silver metal panels slid down over every floor-length window and over the front door, sealing them in and the tori’dara out. With the apartment now sealed off, Thalcu knew they had begun a waiting game. They would hide there in the dark while the tori’dara lurked outside, and neither group would budge. How long could such a waiting game last? Thalcu didn’t want to raise her baby in a dark, locked down apartment!

No one else seemed to be worrying about the future, however. Everyone else was just relieved to enter the safety and the beauty of the apartment, though Thalcu could see them all giving Mercy incredulous looks, no doubt wondering how she could afford the place.

“Home sweet home,” said Mercy, turning a dial on the wall and bringing the lights up brighter. She glanced at Rose. “Isn’t that what you humans say?”

“You were on Earth, weren’t you?” said Rose with interest. “With my Quinn? You helped her!” She smiled at Mercy sweetly. “Zita told me how you looked after her, and I just wanted to thank you!”

“Uh .
