The reality of waging war became clear once the excitement of the Declaration of Independence faded. An army had to be raised, officers appointed, supplies gathered, and funds found. And that did not even include the actual fighting.
In 1775, when the war began in Massachusetts, the Continental army wasn't an army. It was a group of boys and men who came together to keep British soldiers from taking over their farms and houses. They were not prepared to leave their work and families to fight a long war. They had had no military training and were given no uniforms, and the only weapons they carried were the ones they brought from home. No camps or forts had been established for them, and they slept on the ground or in barns when they were on the march. They found food when and where they could.
