Chapter 24

Bralazin

I WOKE UP IN A FOUL mood. It was ridiculous, but I knew why. Isa wasn’t in bed with me.

Completely and totally ridiculous. I had only slept with her that one time, and she was the only woman I had ever spent the entire night with, but it felt like this is where she belonged. It’s that, or I wasn’t happy to be told I couldn’t have her, which was no less ridiculous.

I never got everything I wanted. From early childhood till now, I either lacked the means to fulfill my frivolous wishes, or I had too many responsibilities that prevented me.

This Christmas thing couldn’t come fast enough. There were still a few months ahead of us, but maybe if we spent more time shopping in the other world, it wouldn’t be too bad. We needed gifts. For everyone.

I frowned as I got out of bed and began getting dressed. If we needed to get gifts for everyone, and Isa had already gotten one for Ricci, did it mean I had to get something for Isa, too? What would she even like besides knives and guns?

Maybe I could get her a ribbon. Women loved ribbons, right? Except she could get a truckload any day she wanted. I needed help with this. Seth would know better what to get. He was good about these things.

I left my room and went to the showers to wash up. Isa and Val stood by the giant mirror, applying their makeup as men and women went in and out of the shower. Women, of course, dressed fully before letting anyone see them. Half the men strolled around wearing nothing but a towel around their waist.

I wished the girls a good morning and went in for a lukewarm shower. No matter how many heaters we added, it never seemed enough.

I got out as quickly as I could, threw clean clothes on, and left the stall to find Isa looking at me through the mirror. And she was pouting.

“You put your shirt on,” she said.

My hands itched to touch her, to show everyone that she was mine. Instead, I came closer and leaned over so both of them could hear me as I whispered, “this world isn’t like yours. Women are expected to only sleep with their husbands.”

Val snorted. “Yeah, that’s not gonna happen.”

“And,” I continued, “you two are ladies, otherworlders. A lot of men might try to charm you to gain access to your world and your riches.”

“I don’t have any riches,” Val said. “Thanks for the big brother talk, though, even if it is kinda weird, considering.” She gestured between me and Isa.

I looked at Isa, noticing the gold in her eyes. Maybe that was what I needed to give her, gold jewelry. It was valuable in her world. Except, I could give her bubbles like that any day.

“Do I have something on my face?” Isa asked.

“You look beautiful today.”

“She looks beautiful every day,” Val said. “Try harder next time.”

Why couldn’t Isa be an only child?

“I’ll see you at breakfast,” I said.
