More than any other branch of the American military, the US Navy prided itself on order and protocol. Everyone had a place, and each person had a role to play on land and sea.

But thirty minutes into the Japanese attack, it had become clear that the Navy had no plan for responding to such a brazen assault on American soil. Instead, by eight thirty that morning, ordinary sailors, soldiers, nurses, and civilians put an unofficial rescue operation into action.

Sailors dragged their wounded buddies onto land. Men with no medical training applied makeshift bandages and compresses, doing anything they could to keep the wounded alive long enough to receive proper care.

Before long, a stream of wounded men picked up speed, flowing toward Hickam Hospital. And there, the nursing staff, only six women in total, suddenly found themselves on the front lines of a new, unexpected war.
